STEDMAN, Capt. John Gabriel.
Narrative for a five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Negros of Surinam, in Guyana.

This large paper example cost £7. 7s on publication as opposed to an ordinary copy which cost £5. 5s. The number of additions, abridgements, translations and versions which were published shows the impact made at the time of Stedman's unaffected Narrative of his experiences in Guiana.

Second Edition, 2 vols, 4to, dedication, preface, subscriber's list, contents, text. 81 engraved plates, large paper with hand coloured plates in contemporary sprinkled calf, spines raised bands in gilt, ruled in compartments. Red leather to compartments 2 & 4.Some wear to joints and covers. Many of the plates were engraved by Blake, who learnt his trade from Basire, to whom he was apprenticed for several years from 1772. Blake did much work as a journeyman engraver for booksellers. Stedman, an officer in the Scots Brigade in Holland, volunteered for service against the Negros in Dutch Guiana. While out there he to all intents and purposes married the subject of plate number 9, Joanna, a Mulato, and had a son by her, who became a midshipman in the British navy, but died young.
