Red leather to compartments 2 & 4.Some wear to joints and covers. Many of the plates were engraved by Blake, who learnt his trade from Basire, to whom he was apprenticed for several years from 1772. Blake did much work as a journeyman engraver for booksellers. Stedman, an officer in the Scots Brigade in Holland, volunteered for service against the Negros in Dutch Guiana. While out there he to all intents and purposes married the subject of plate number 9, Joanna, a Mulato, and had a son by her, who became a midshipman in the British navy, but died young.
