Memoirs of the Court of Charles the Second. With Numerous Additions and Illustration, as Edited by Sir Walter Scott. Also; The Personal History of Charles, Including The Kings Own Account of His Escape and Preservation After the Battle of Worcester.
A vivid account of the licentious court of Charles II, ostensibly the Memoirs of Philbert, Comte de Grammont (1621-1707), A Gascon nobleman, who had served in the French army but was exiled and fled to the English court, from 1662-64, attending again in 1670, 1671, 1676 and 1688 (James II). He dictated his account of his early life, at the age of eighty, to his brother-in-law, Anthony (Antoine) Hamilton (1646-1720), who is considered the principal author of the Memoirs. Hamilton, a Roman Catholic, was born in Ireland and spent much of his early life in France, later serving with the forces of James II in Ireland, 1689-90.

Octavo pp. vi + 546. Bound in full red morocco; gilt titles Intricate and very decorative infilled box design and raised bands to spine; gilt rules to boards; blue endpapers; gilt decorated inner dentelles; top edge gilt. Illustrated throughout with five hand-coloured engravings with 51 extra illustrations from the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly portraits. Occasional offsetting from plates to text; otherwise, a tight copy in excellent condition. Coloured plates in order: 1. Anne d'Autriche. 2. Monsieur Brisacier. 3. Francesco Corbetta. 4. George Hamilton. 5. Duke of Monmouth.
