Malerische Ansichten aus dem Orient, gesammelt auf der Reise… Herzogs Maximilian v. Bayern nach Nubien, Aegypten, Palaestina…im Jahre 1838 und herausgegeben von Heinrich von Mayr.
Von Mayr accompanied Duke Maximilian II of Bavaria and his entourage as a personal painter on an eight-month "Grand Tour" to the Orient and back. The first commissions from Duke Maximilian had an encouraging effect, who, after the young artist had executed several larger paintings, cavalcades, hunts, and the like at the court of the Prince of Thurn and Taxis in 1832 and 1833, took him as an artistic companion on his oriental journey in 1838 and 1839. The award of the title of ducal cabinet painter was only a distinguishing formality since the duke held the artist in high regard and honored him with true friendship. They then traveled via Malta back to Munich, arriving in September 1838.

[Picturesque views from the Orient, collected on the journey... of Duke Maximilian v. Bavaria to Nubia, Egypt, Palestine...in 1838 and edited by Heinrich von Mayr.] FIRST EDITION. Folio, 10pp text. Sixty highly hand-finished hand-coloured lithographed plates on light card within gilt lithographed decorative border, original leather-backed boards, upper board elaborately blind-stamped with title embossed in gilt. This was the account of Duke Maximilian von Bayern’s journey through Nubia, Egypt, and Palestine in 1838. The plates are scenes of Eastern life, including a doctor’s visit to the Harem. Interestingly because of his professional status, he was the only detailed external source of information re women’s lives, health, etc., in the Harem at the time, a source of great interest to European observers. Mayr has also included detailed plates of furniture, clothing, musical instruments, and decorative tiles. The costume plates include that of a Greek woman at her embroidery.
