LAVATER, Jean Caspar.
Le Lavater des Dames Ou l'art de connoitre les femmes sur leur physionomie; suivi d'un essai sur les moyens de procreer des Enfans d'esprit avec...

Adapted from Lavater's four-volume 'Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe', first published in Leipzig between 1775 and 1778, then translated into French and English. A Swiss pastor and friend of Goethe and the painter Henry Fuseli, Lavater introduced the idea that physiognomy related to specific character traits of individuals (rather than general types, as the ancients believed), and that a person's character could be elucidated through examining his or her "lines of countenance." He based his ideas on those of the Italian polymath Giambattista della Porta and Sir Thomas Browne's Religio Medici.
