STACKELBERG, Ernest.
Prince Grigori Gagarin.
Le Caucase pittoresque, dessins d'apres nature par le Prince Gregorie Gagarine.

Gagarin worked not only with brushes but also with a pencil and turned out to be an extremely talented graphic artist. His paintings, which he brought back from the Caucasus, show his vision, as artistic as it is gentle, of this region which, for him, was much more than a dismal war zone. His skillful alternation between delicately colored lithographs and watercolors and intensely colored oil paintings enchanted the art world.
