PETTERSSON, Carl Anton.
Lappland, dess Natur och Folk...
Pettersson, a naval officer who had been commissioned by Charles XV to carry out astronomical surveying, gives his account of his travels made through Lapland in 1850-1862. Accompanied by Abraham Lundquist's (1817-1892) exceptionally beautiful views reflecting Lappland's striking scenery and culture, peopled with Lapplanders in national dress and many reindeer, it is set against an ever changing spectrum arctic light. Lundquist's lithographs, characterized by a masterful and restrained use of color, capture the feel of the wild Lapp landscape with its variegated sky and vast mountainous expanses. Many scenes show Sami natives and their hamlets, often with few wooden dwellings and a church in a stockade.
