Thomas Brodhead Van Buren (1824-1889) was a nephew of the eighth U.S. president Martin Van Buren. In 1874 he was sent to Japan to be the Consul General by President Ulysses Grant and stayed until 1885.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo pp. [2] ii [2] 59 [1] 10; with 11 hand-coloured mounted albumen photographs (Emperor Hito Empress Haruko the Ainus a geisha, a samurai in armour, a coolie in winter dress, etc.); Original marbled boards lettered in gilt to upper board, re-backed in green morocco lettered in gilt on spine. This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper "With the compliments of the author Yokohama Japan Aug. 1, 1882." The work was prepared by Van Buren in his capacity as U.S. Consul-General and is here reprinted with additions and photographs from Reports from the Consuls of the United States. No. 2.
