With 31 plates, of which nine are beautifully hand-coloured and finished with touches of gum-arabic, all by a contemporary hand. The hand-coloured plates depict Naval uniforms. One such plate shows an array of 36 hand-coloured flags of the world - the other plates are steel-engraved and depict dramatic naval landscapes, sail ships, etc. Includes an engraved frontispiece. With 118(!) wood-engraved vignettes illustrations throughout the text. With a beautifully engraved title page displaying charming allegorical motifs. Half gilt red morocco with title to spine in gilt, some wear to top and tail of spine and extremities, else good. Coloured plates in order: 1. Amiral. 2. Vice - Amiral. 3. Capitaine de Vaisseau. 4.
