La Jeune Armée. Illustrée d¹aquarelles et de dessins.
Printed separately by the Paris firm of Draeger et Lesieur, beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured. First edition. The army was created following the disaster of the defeat of France in the Franco-German war in 1870. Thomas Jules Richard Maillot (aka Jules Richard) was born in ca 1825 and died in 1899 in Paris. He was a French journalist and writer.

[The Young Army. Illustrated with watercolors and drawings.] Quarto. Pp. 315 (verso blank). Plus 40 leaves of hand-coloured plates, including a frontispiece with facing tissue-guard. Large armorial head-and tail-pieces illustrated initials. Title-page printed in red and black and with a handsome armorial device. Half-title present. Hardcover bound in the original publisher's full lavishly decorated, coloured cloth by A. Souze. Large armorial illustration in gold, black, and silver within elaborate frame gilt lettering to upper board and spine illustration to spine and lower board. Spine 'sunned,' spine-ends worn, short split to head of lower joint, a corner-tip slightly worn and a little shaken. All edges are dyed in the French tricolour. The binding incorporates a second elaborately decorated original paper cover beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured with large gilt blue and red lettering within a large gold frame printed separately by the Paris firm of Draeger et Lesieur tipped-in onto half-title.
