CRUIKSHANK, George.
Illustrations of Time.
For Cruikshank, time had three components: first, the line from birth to death, with the curve of rising and then falling action; second, the life of the moment ("the times"), a Hogarthian trope; third, ceremonial and festive times such as May Day and Guy Fawkes Day recurring from year to year and celebrated in traditional ways that fused past with the present. All three components were in George's imagination poised between joyous carpe diem philosophy and its complimentary converse, "time devours all things."
