The History of Java.
The History of Java is a book written by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and published in 1817. It describes the history of the island of Java from ancient times. The most significant work on Java. Raffles' longest-lasting achievement was the founding of modern Singapore. He was also heavily involved in the conquest of the Indonesian island of Java from the Dutch and French in 1811. He lived on the island as Governor for several years, conducting a detailed study of its history and culture.

2 vols. FIRST EDITION. Numerous b/w and colour illustrations. 479; 288 [iv] cclx pp. Hardcover. 4to. 3/4 burgundy leather over red cloth-covered boards. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Inner hinges strengthened. Some light scattered foxing - on the whole, a lovely copy. Raffles was a Governor of Java, and it is said that he completed the 'History' in seven months.
