Historical Portraiture of Leading Events in the Life of Ali Pacha.
A large copy of this picturesque life of Ali Pasha, the Turkish pasha whose court employed the Greek language, as that was the language of most of his populace. The text is taken from Beauchamp's Life of Ali Pacha, the work providing a romanticized account of the extraordinary life of the Albanian-born Ali Pasha (1741-1822), who was given the epithet Aslan, or "The Lion."The strikingly dramatized scenes depicted were chosen by Davenport to give a romantic view of Ali Pacha's life. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small folio, 30pp., [2], 6 hand-coloured aquatint plates, engraved by G. Hunt. 20th century 3/4 red morocco, leather label gilt; lettered upper cover, spine raised bands, gilt lettered, gilt edges; marbled boards and endpapers. The text is taken from the English edition of the Life of Ali Pasha by Beauchamp. The author may be connected with the R.A. Davenport, who produced a biography of Ali in 1837 (Atabey). Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece. Ali Pacha, and his brave Officers, resisting the Turkish Generals, sent with the Death-firman to demand the Vizier's Head. 2. The Youthful Ali Bry. Shewn by his Mother to the Partisans and Vassals of his Father's House. 3. Ali Bey discovers the Chest of Treasure near the Ruins of an old Monastery in the Mountains. 4. The Vow of Vengence made by Ali Pacha and his Sister, Chainitza, over the Dead Body of their Mother. 5. The Vizier Ali Pacha, giving the fatal Signal for the Slaughter of the Gardikistes, shut up in the Khan of Valiarie. 6. The Delivery of the Broken Ring to Ali Pacha's faithful Slave, in the Magazine of the Citadel.
