HARDING, James Duffield.
Harding’s Sketches at Home and Abroad.

Containing landscapes of Britain, Italy, France, Germany, and Monaco. The landscapes were painted during Harding's continental tour from September 1824 to October 1835. This work was an important development in lithography, as this was the first time that tint-stones were used to create further tonal depth to the plates, which later became a popular device in lithography. James Duffield Harding was an English landscape painter, as well as a lithographer. He used tinted papers and opaque paints in watercolour, which proved to be influential.

Folio. Publisher’s green half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, purple flower-patterned cloth boards, inner hinges, and yellow end-papers. It lacks the printed dedication leaf. Lithographed title and 50 tinted lithographs on card, all with fine recent hand-colouring. Extremities rubbed, cloth sides evenly sunned, title leaf a little frayed at fore-edge, an excellent copy. MS inscription "Louisa Gladstone from E.F." on front paste-down. FIRST EDITION. “This book represents something of a landmark in the history of the lithograph in that it may be said to initiate the series of tinted lithographs, which ... were to dominate the market for many years, reaching a peak of ambitious bulk in Roberts’s Holy Land, 1842–9” (Abbey). Harding’s work pleased the dedicatee, King Louis Philippe, so much that he presented him with a diamond ring. The plates are of European scenery in Italy, France, Germany, and England.
