VAN MERKEN, Lucretia Wilhelmina
Germanicus. In Zestien Boeken.
This book is "An Epic about the Roman general Germanicus (15 BC - 19 AD), adopted son of Emperor Tiberius. Van Merken took the material for her poem from the 'Annales' of the Roman historian Tacitus. In addition to his bravery and generosity, his friendship with the Batavians ("our ancestors") also made Germanicus an attractive hero for the patriotic Van Merken. Smit concludes that with 'Germanicus' Van Merken has even surpassed her biblical epic 'David': the work ""belongs to the very best that 18th-century classicism has produced in our country"". He finds it incomprehensible that it is no longer even mentioned in the most recent textbooks. 'Germanicus' was reprinted once: in 1839 by P. Los in Dordrecht. In 1787 a French translation appeared by P.J. Uylenbroek in Amsterdam."
