[COSTUME]
Fetes de Gutenberg. Cortège Industriel de Strasbourg. 25 juin 1840.

An impressive suite of 53 plates corresponding to the great parade or industrial procession, of the various trades of the city. This book shows us the procession of all the Strasbourg corporations, dissolved by the French Revolution, which, for the occasion, brought out their traditional costumes and each produced a "masterpiece". Our album represents the procession alone. There are also three plates for the first day of inauguration, the third day and a sheet of music (score).

[Festival for Gutenberg, Industrial procession in Strasburg, June 25 1840] Oblong folio. Later, half brown, hard-grained morocco with title and date embossed in gilt to upper board. Raised bands to spine, extremities slightly rubbed and worn, interior a little toned, but a lovely example overall. A magnificent work with the later first cover preserved. Possible bookplate (?) 'Strobel' on front pastedown. Extremely nice album of 50 water-coloured and gummed lithographs. The plates are numbered up to 53 (comprising five duplicates, folded and two unnumbered).
