A set of travel guides to eight historic capitals of Europe, with brilliant hand-colored views of the Pont-Neuf in Paris, St. Marylebone in London, the Fontanka river in St. Petersburg, the Belvedere Palace in Vienna, Capitoline Hill in Rome, the Arsenal in Berlin, San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid, and Sereraglio Point near Constantinople.

Eight volumes. 36; 35; 36; 36; 36; 36; 36; 36 pp. With eight hand-coloured aquatint frontispieces. 12mo. (150 x 90 mm) bound in original glazed boards of various colours (blue, purple, cream, ivory, white, green, and pink) embossed in blind with each city's name printed in black in a centre medallion. In the attractive original pink patterned paper slipcase, well preserved in an exquisite new half morocco solander box with beautiful and elaborate gilt work to spine. Black title label with gilt lettering. A charming set of French guidebooks from the Romantic era, describing the major capitals of a major European city, each illustrated with a brilliantly hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece. On the front, pastedown to each volume, the bookplate of "A. Caron, Dunkerque" is displayed. The complete set is rare, with only McGill University listed on OCLC as having all eight volumes. Some scattered foxing, but overall a lovely set. Coloured plates in order: 1. Madrid. 2. Paris. 3. Vienne. 4. Londres. 5. Constantinople. 6. St. Petersbourg. 7. Berlin. 8. Rome.
