Esquisses Africaines, dessinees pendant un Voyage a Alger et lithographiees par Adolphe Otth.
Otth in 1837 undertook a first trip to Provence, the Balearic Islands, and Algeria where he returned with the materials for the series of plates that we present here: "I brought back from my travels a considerable number of sketches, of which I intend only about thirty of the most interesting to compose this collection. Which will add perhaps something to the merit and interest of this work is that these views were sketched on the spot and lithographed by the traveler himself on his original drawings, which is quite rarely encountered." (excerpt from the foreword). He then undertook in 1839 a second trip to Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Syria which led him to Jerusalem, where he died of the plague shortly after his arrival. The very beautiful plates show us views of the monuments and gardens of Algiers, the gulf, the mosques, the aqueduct of Bab-el-Oued, the Casbah, the lime kiln, the port, the streets, the plane tree cafe, and the fort.

[African sketches, drawn during a trip to Algiers and lithographed by Adolphe Otth.] FIRST EDITION. Large folio, lithographed title, 14pp. text, lithographed portrait on India paper, 30 tinted lithographed plates by and after Otth, each captioned in letterpress in the lower margin, plus lithographed title, original printed wrapper to upper cover, contemporary cloth-backed boards, marbled sides, printed label on upper board. Slight foxing throughout. A scarce and attractive set of views. Otth, a physician, naturalist, and native of Bern, traveled in 1836 to the Balearic Islands and Algeria via Dauphine and Provence. His research was largely on insect, reptile, and amphibian life, of which he collected a large number of species. In 1837, a year before this present work appeared, Otth was the first to describe the frog genus 'Discglossus,' the “Painted Frog.” His travels were mainly based around the Mediterranean.
