Folio. (24" x16") 1/4 original calf over marbled boards - a little rubbed. Spine with raised bands in gilt in seven gilt compartments, lettered in the second compartment. Head and Foot of spine and joints rubbed and worn. Engraved calligraphic title page with aquatint vignette leaf of dedication six final leaves of Subscribers and six parts bound as follows - Vatican 16pp and 8 line engraved plates. Basilica di S. Giovanni Laterano in Roma 13pp 8 line engraved plates and two hand-coloured aquatints. Cathedrale de Milan (Milano) 24pp 9 line engraved plates and two hand-coloured aquatints. Cathedrale de Sienne (Sienna) 14pp 8 line engraved plates and two hand-coloured aquatints. Duomo di Pisa 12pp 8 line engraved plates and two hand-coloured aquatints. Santa Stefano Vienna 12pp 8 line engraved plates and two uncoloured aquatint plates. The ten fine aquatint plates (8 superbly hand-coloured) are divided into 2 per cathedral - one exterior and one interior - all with numerous figures and details to give a sense of action and detail. The aquatint plates are issued on a thicker darker paper. Condition front endpapers a bit creased some slight spotting but generally good. The bibliography Brunet (1 1843) this work was issued in parts (livraisons) and was issued in three states -with line engraved illustrations (15 fr), uncoloured aquatints (20 fr), and coloured aquatints (30 fr). This would indicate that the Vatican section was bound from the line engraved issue, Roma, Milan, Sienna, and Pisa from the hand-coloured issue, and Vienna from the uncoloured aquatint issue. A RARE WORK. This is a fine colour plate book dedicated to Pope Leon XII. Coloured plates in order: 1. Une exterieure de la Basilique de St. Jean Lateran a Rome. 2. Une interieure de la Basilique de St. Jean Lateran a Rome. 3. Cathedrale de Milan. 4. Interieur de la Cathedrale de Milan. 5. Exterieur de l'Eglise Metropolitaine de Sienne. 6. Interieur de l'Eglise Metropolitaine de Sienne. 7. Une exterieur de la cathedrale de Pise. 8. Une interieure de la cathedrale de Pise.
