SCHENKMAN, J.
De Wondervolle Reizen & Avonturen van Kapitein Gulliver.
A charming Dutch edition children's book, published in Amsterdam of Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Lovely vignette illustrations. Jonathan Swift, pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff, (1667-1745) was an Anglo-Irish author who was the foremost prose satirist in the English language.

4to. Orig. half cloth, with full-page lithographed plate finely coloured by hand mounted on front cover and full-page publisher's catalogue on the back cover. There are 19 richly illustrated pages, including a lithographed title and half-page and quarter-page lithographed illustrations, all beautifully coloured by hand and all versos blank. (20) lvs. The rarest of all the popular hand-coloured lithographed children's pictures books published by G. Theodoor Bom at Amsterdam in the early 1860's. They were the happy result of the close co-operation between the artist J.W.A. van Hilverdink (1809-1864), who made the beautiful illustrations, and the school teacher J. Schenkman (1806-1863), who provided the lively children's poetry. A list of these popular picture books is found on the back cover, including "De Koningin der Poppen", "Het Leven van Jan Klaassen", "Pierrot's Leven en Bedrijf", "De nieuwe Circus", "Het nieuwe Apenspel", "Tijl Uilenspiegel", etc. Today they are on the top of the list of children's book collectors, but good copies are hard to come by as children also loved the books. The captionless illustrations are in the vignette style, running above and down the left side of each page of Dutch text. Bookplate of 'L.H. Dorrenboom' on front pastedown. Protective wrapper covering book. Good condition.
