An extremely rare set of colourful and lively lithographs in the 'costumbrista' tradition, illustrating types, costumes and popular amusements of Bogota, and the scenery of Columbia. Ramón Torres Méndez was a Colombian painter and lithographer considered one of the most prolific and important costumbrismo artists of the 19th century in Colombia, best known for his genre works into everyday Colombian life documenting the costumes, occupations, and pastimes of the common people of his time.

Oblong quarto (265 x 350mm) Modern blue half crushed-morocco, lettered in gilt to spine, extremities slightly rubbed, some spotting. 16 lithographic plates, coloured by a contemporary hand and heightened with gum arabic, captioned in Spanish and imprint to lower right. The figures are being shown against both landscape and architectural backgrounds. Ramon Torres Mendez (1809-1885) was one of the most important Colombian painters of the period, and this seems to be the earliest appearance of these plates. Coloured plates in order: 1.
