MAASKAMP, E.
Costumes, Moeurs et Habillemens dans les Pays-Bas Unis dessines et colores d'apres nature.

An excellent series of hand-coloured plates showing various Dutch costumes and scenes from Dutch daily life, including ice-skating, a maid pouring milk, and a young girl playing the piano, engraved by Lodewijk Portman (1772-ca. 1813), who excelled in illustrating customs and folk-lore. These plates were published and re-issued several times by the famous firm of Evert Maaskamp in Amsterdam, which specialized in publishing wonderful hand-coloured plates of costumes, landscapes, and views."

FIRST 8vo edition (following five 4to editions) and the FIRST edition in French. Possibly the original binding. Spine is new. Gilt border to boards, new hinges. Hand-coloured allegorical page and 20 charming hand-coloured plates, each with their protective tissue guard. This early edition has 20 plates (10.5 x 7.5 cm) later, editions had 24 plates. This was a popular work that was reprinted several times: 4to version was printed five times, four times with a Dutch-French text, and once with an English text. One of the most charming books published in the Netherlands. The 4to work became scarce over time as the more significant part of the copies were taken to pieces to sell the beautiful, hand-coloured prints separately. They were originally published in 5 installments of 4 costume prints in each. *Ron Norman of Hartlepool carried out rebinding and restoration work on this book.
