FIRST EDITION. Large 12mo (in sixes) pp. viii 404; with printer's device on title and 18 hand-coloured engraved plates; half-title; upper inner hinge cracked stitching shaken in places; original red morocco-backed printed boards rubbed (with some loss of repeated title-device on upper cover) and bumped. Slight foxing throughout. Title and rule in gilt to spine and hinges. "From the Library of Alan Angele" on front pastedown. Written inscription on front free endpaper "Thomas Edward Davies, July 29th, 1831, The gift of his Aunt Sarah Parker". A delightful cosmography for children. The descriptions of countries and their inhabitants begin in Europe and progress through Asia, Africa, North America, and South America to Polynesia. The plates are entirely devoted to the races of the world, and each contains four vignette portraits so that 72 different peoples are represented. In some cases, the distinction between countrymen of high and low birth is demonstrated as, for instance, with 'American Indians' and 'American Indian Chiefs.' As the conclusion is dated 1826, the date of this work is sometimes given as [1826], resulting in a confusion of 'editions.' Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece.
