						RITCHIE, Alexander Hay [engraver]
Clans of the Highlands of Scotland.

The costumes, tartans, sports (golf, curling, shot put, hammer throw), hunting (deer, otter), angling, dancing, and other characteristic activities of the Highland clans of Scotland, here charmingly engraved (and presumably designed) by Alexander Hay Ritchie in what appears to be one of his earliest recorded works from his late teens, before emigrating to the United States.

FIRST (only) EDITION. Small octavo (5 1/2" x 4 3/8"); 142 x 111 mm). Twelve hand-coloured engraved plates signed Alexander Richie in accordion format. Original red cloth, gilt fillets, title, and decoration to upper board. An embossed emblem in blind to the lower board. Plates mounted on green linen. There are a few small ink spots to cloth, otherwise an excellent copy of an extremely scarce panorama, with only one copy located worldwide at the National Library of Scotland and no auction records within the last thirty-five years. Unrecorded by Abbey, Tooley, Siltzer. "In a purely popular sense, no Scottish-American artist ever commanded such wide attention as Alexander Hay Ritchie, who died at New Haven, Conn., Sept. 19, 1895. He was born in Glasgow in 1822 and, in early life, removed to Edinburgh and was educated in Heriot's Hospital. He was apprenticed to a firm of machinists but developed a taste for art and studied under Sir William Allan, one of the most famous historical painters of Scotland. In 1843 he settled in the United States, after a short stay in Canada, and soon afterward took up his residence in Brooklyn, where he resided until just before his death. He quickly acquired a high rank as an engraver in stipple and mezzotint. He gradually won a reputation as an original painter in oils, particularly portraits and historic scenes in which figures predominated. His popularity reached its height with his painting of the 'Death of Lincoln,' and such works as 'Mercy Knocking at the Gate,' 'Fitting Out Moses for the Fair' showed that he possessed the charms of fancy as well as the graces of art. His painting of "Washington and His Generals" proved equally popular, and by means of his engraving of it, that patriotic group now decorates thousands of homes throughout the American continent. As a portrait painter, his 'Dr. McCosh,' 'Henry Clay,' and 'Professor Charles Hodge of Princeton' are notable examples. Mr. Ritchie left some particularly creditable examples of his skill, while as a book illustrator, his graver was constantly employed for many years prior to his death" (Ross, The Scot in America, p. 184). Coloured plates in order: 1. Clan McPherson (Golfing). 2. Clan McDonald. 3. 78th Highlanders. Ross-shire Buffs. Clan McKenzie. 4. Clan Campbell (Throwing the Hammer). 5. Clan MacGregor (Leistering Salmon). 6. Clan Murray. 7. Clan McLean (Deer Stalking). 8. Clan Grant (Curling). 9. Clan Stuart (Angling). 10. Clan McDuff (Otter Hunting). 11.
