The fire started in the fleet area around Kongens Nytorv and spread to the west. About 900 houses burned down and about 6,000 of the city's 100,000 inhabitants became homeless. The fire is, together with Copenhagen's fire of 1728 and renovations in the 1940s, a major reason why there are not many traces of medieval Copenhagen today.
