SCHOPPE, Julius and others.
Beschreibung des Festes: Der Zauber der Weissen Rose gegeben in Potsdam am 13 July 1829 zum Geburtstage ihrer Majestaet der Kaiserin von Russland.
First Edition of this record of the grand celebrations which took place in honour of the birthday of Alexandra Fyodorovna, Empress of Russia (wife of Czar Nicholas I), born Princess Charlotte of Prussia [1798-1860], who was then in Berlin on a visit to her father, King Frederick William III. The theme of the celebrations was the mediaeval legend of 'Blanchefleur' or the White Rose, a nickname given to Alexandra in childhood. Eleven of the fine hand-coloured plates by Ernst Gärtner, Julius Schoppe, Heinrich Stürmer, and Theodor Hosemann depict the procession of the participants in the tournament regaled in full mediaeval costume. Others depict exterior and interior views of the palace, including one showing the ball in the Grotto Hall, and allegorical tableaux of the Seasons, Virtues and other subjects.
