Small 4to. Title printed in black and red, engraved by J. Wandelaar, and 12 engraved plates by J. Punt, all with very fine period hand colouring and gilt highlights done during the eighteenth century. Bound in Dutch red morocco, elaborately bordered and panelled in gilt with imperial coronets at each corner, spine in six compartments, with raised bands, morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with a repeat, decorated in gilt, gilt edged, marbled endpapers. A beautiful hand coloured copy in a period morocco binding. PROVENANCE: J.R.G. Acquit (1829-96), signature. Abraham is the common patriarch of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and some other religions. In Judaism, he is the founding father of the covenant of the pieces, the special relationship between the Hebrews and God; in Christianity, he is the prototype of all believers, Jewish or Gentile; and in Islam, he is seen as a link in the chain of prophets that begins with Adam and culminates in Muhammad.
