BUTLER, John.
A Sketch of Assam: with some account of the Hill tribes. By an officer in the Hon. East India Company's Bengal Native Infantry in Civil Employ. With illustrations from sketches by the author
Butler was a Major in the East India Company's 55th Bengal Native Infantry and served as the Principal Assistant to the Governor-General on the North East Frontier of Assam. A delightful work highlighting some of the costumes, places, peoples, and fauna of this enchanting region of northeast India.

FIRST EDITION. viii 200 8 [adv] pp. 8vo. Original publisher's red cloth stamped in blind, and with a gilt illustration in block of hunting from an elephant on upper board; new spine and marbled edges and endpapers. Illus. 16 [of 17] plates (15 hand-coloured lithographs), four wood engravings, and one folding map. Butler's first book on Assam was continued with Travels and Adventures in the Province of Assam during a residence of fourteen years (1855). Provenance: MS inscription: "James Hooper Law the gift from his kind Grandpapa - E. R. Roberts Fort Hill 1849"; thence "Robert Cornish 1887" signed in purple pencil on verso first blank. In addition to a plate of a Mangoe Fly and a long-horned Beetle and other natural history subjects, there is also a plate of Buffalo shooting and costumes and types of Assam, together with their hunting equipment, etc. Coloured plates in order: 1.
