This is Tempsky's engaging account of a journey along the highlands of Central America, from Mazatlan in Mexico to La Union in El Salvador; attractively illustrated with early examples of chromolithography from the author's own watercolours.

FIRST EDITION. Octavo, 14 plates, of which 5 are chromolithographs (nos. 1, 3, 4, 6, 11), 9 other plated uncoloured wood engravings, coloured folding map of the route through Mexico, Guatemala & San Salvador. Contemporary full calf, gilt in rule to boards, gilt paneled spine, green letter piece, marbled edges, and endpapers. Bookplate of 'Norman.R. Robins' to front pastedown. MS inscription to a prelim: 'J. Bourne, with the best wishes of Percival Currey, on his leaving Eton Election, 1866'. An interesting account of the author's journey and his attempt to portray the inhabitants "...in a life-like manner...free of prejudice either in favour or against them neither leaning to romantic illumination nor to cold dissection of their characteristics." Illustrated with beautiful chromolithographs by Hanhart, including a folding view of Durango and a series of woodcut plates and text drawings. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece. Mexicans near the Hacienda of El Valle. 2. View of Durango from the Santuario (folding plate). 3. Fight between the Ranchero and his Indian antagonists. 4. Main buildings the ruins near Mitla. 5. Lake of Atitlan.
