FIRST EDITION. 4to, 522pp, text, contemporary half calf over marbled boards with a gilt fillet, spine in decorative, gilded compartments, red and green morocco labels lettered in gilt to the second and fourth compartments. Twenty-eight coloured lithographic plates, including frontis, two folding maps. Henderson studied Brazil during a failed visit to obtain a position at the British Legation in Rio; however, he was received into a merchant's house. The subsequent knowledge he gained of South America was sufficient for him to be appointed Consul General for Columbia in Bogota. The views in this work are made from his drawings on the spot and represent essential visual documentation of Brazilian history. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontispiece.
