A truly classic study of English costume illustrated with numerous examples from illuminated manuscripts held in the British Library, the Bodleian, and Harleian collections. Complete with 153 hand-colored plates (10 more than the first edition) of people, costumes, armour, seals, and everyday objects from the time of the Saxons to the end of the 17th century. Strutt was an English engraver and writer on art.

2 volumes, 1st revised edition with regrouped and rearranged plates (13" x 10.5") pp. xiv + cxvii + 117; vi + 279. Containing 153 hand-coloured engraved plates, all hors-texte. In a contemporary or original binding, 1/2 brown morocco & marbled boards gilt in rule to boards and spines, titled spines; edges moderately rubbed; neatly re-hinged. Plates and text spotless with very few minor fox marks; some old faint and unobtrusive damp staining to the very edge of some plates; overall a good set with brilliant hand-colouring.
