Two Journeys to Japan 1856-7.
A rare primary account of a British sloop of war. On their second voyage, they were allowed ashore in Japan. A most detailed primary account of Shimoda, what they saw, who they met, and their impressions of the people and land. Cornwallis and a few other passengers stayed about two weeks in Shimoda. Afterward, the crew and passengers visited Hokkaido, Nagasaki, and Okinawa. At each place, the crew and passengers left the ship to explore the cities, their people, culture, and customs.
