Full black morocco gilt edge to boards and titles to the spine. all edges gilt. To the edge of the book there is a beautiful fore-edge painting of Newstead Abbey Byron's home. Thro' thy battlements Newstead the hollow winds whistle; Thous the hall of my fathers art gone to decay". Despite Byron's assertions that "Newstead and I stand or fall together" the decay was too much for him and he spent much of his life trying to sell the estate. Very clean and attractive painting. Possible signed "Hili" to the corner. The fore-edge paper is believed to be contemporary with publication or shortly after this (certainly prior to the edges being gilded.) Plates uncoloured, so not listed.
