CHAUCER, Geoffrey.
The Flower And The Leaf.

The Floure and the Leafe is an anonymous Middle English allegorical poem in 595 lines of rhyme royal, written around 1470. During the 17th, 18th, and most of the 19th centuries, it was mistakenly believed to be the work of Geoffrey Chaucer, and was generally considered to be one of his finest poems.[1] The name of the author is not known, but the poem presents itself as the work of a woman, and some critics are inclined to take this at face value

Full Vellum. Book Condition: Very Good. Edith Harwood (illustrator). Limited Edition. (5 1/2 x 7 1/4"). This example is # 53 of 165 copies only. 45pp. +(1) vellum pages bound in full vellum with a blind-stamped rosed on the upper board. Three full-page illustrations, including the frontispiece, then 85 (two to a page, excepting the final page) hand-coloured ornamental 'initial' letters drawn and colored by Edith Harwood, title in gilt to flat spine, some scuffing and soiling to white vellum but an essentially a very beautiful work. Private Press. The work is a 595 line poem written in Middle English in 'Rhyme Royal' stanzas. Throughout the centuries, this work was incorrectly attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer, but current thinking places the date of writing (ca 1460-80) as too late for him and is now thought to be a woman's work. The title of this work comes from an aristocratic game of French and English courts of the 14th century in which members of the court took sides in loves debates - in this case, either the flower or the leaf.
