PINKERTON, Robert.
Russia: or, miscellaneous observations on the past and present state of that country and its inhabitants. Compiled from notes made on the spot, during travels, at different times, in the service of the Bible Society, and a residence of many

As agent in Russia to the British and Foreign Bible Society for many years, Pinkerton traveled extensively throughout the country and was afforded ample opportunity to observe the Russian people's character, manners, religious practices, and economic and social conditions. His narrative embraces a wide variety of topics, including the state of the Russian serfs and the Jews, hospital and prison conditions, the problem of drunkenness, the enmity between Russians and Poles, and the labours of the Russian Bible Society, and the religious character of the late Emperor Alexander.
