JERRARD, Paul.
Picturesque Scenes and Their Associations.

A magnificent example of Victorian colour publishing. Jerrard, who styles himself on the plates (lithographer and print colourer), published books of the richest quality. The work, however, was a swan song for this type of colour plate work as already the photographers had begun to make serious inroads into the market of topographical material, which spelled the end of this form of a luxury item.

Folio [Imperial 8vo] 375×275 mm. printed throughout printed in gold pp. [1] title [2] blank [3] contents [4-27] text and plates [28] blank [29] advertisement [30] blank; Title heightened in water-colour; 12 hand-coloured tinted lithograph plates [tabulated below] with decorative gilt rustic borders each facing a page of gothic text printed in gold and again with a decorative rustic border enclosing supplementary views to enhance the main illustrations in -day of yore- or of modern; with a final leaf of advertisements; floral end-papers printed in gold. Original cream cloth the upper board with a hand coloured tinted lithograph view of Balmoral Castle- glazed and overprinted with a gilt rustic border; the lower board with a blind-stamped panel and a central gilt design by John Leighton. From the advertisement, Jerrard states that the work was available -In imperial 8vo price 1l 1s; or extra bound in Patent Binding for Special Presents price 1l 16s 6d.- this example being in the special patent binding. Jerrard published an 'Elegant Suite of Table Books.' Most appropriate for Marriage Birthday and Festive Presents' included works mainly on exotic birds, flowers, and historical scenes. With the availability of railway travel and paddle steamer trips, he would have seen the commercial return on a book of views that included Wales, the North of England, and Scotland. Few copies of the book appear to have survived complete as fashion and book breakers have taken their toll; only one copy in the Waddleton collection at Cambridge University is held in any public institution. A most desirable work. *Ron Norman of Hartlepool carried out rebinding and restoration work on this book. (Ronnorm@aol.com)* Coloured plates in order: [Small coloured vignette on title page] 1.
