Qur'an
The Qur'an or Koran is the central religious text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God. It is organized into 114 chapters, which consist of verses. In addition to its religious significance, it is widely regarded as the finest work in Arabic literature and has significantly influenced the Arabic language.

Illuminated manuscript on paper, from Safavid Persia, probably Tabriz, dated 1081 AH [ca. 1679 AD] and signed by the scribe Muhammad Mahdi al-Tabrizi. Copied in single column, in Arabic on gold-speckled paper with polished paper margins (from a different stock), opening two leaves with gilt and polychrome head-pieces and additional gilt decorations to the outer margins, catch-words throughout, 167 by 117 mm; in a polished red leather binding with hand-painted gilt motifs and designs to boards in the Ottoman style. Boards scuffed and rubbed, fore-edge painted design.
