12mo. Modern half red morocco with marbled boards, gilt in rule to boards, spine with raised bands of gilt, with title in gilt, and repeated gilt motif. With 8 full-page lithographed plates, nicely coloured by hand. 287, (1) pp. Nicely illustrated edition of the very popular stories about the amorous adventures of John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester (1648-1680), together with Rochester's poetry. Based on a historic character, a beautiful youth living at the rather frivolous court of Charles II, the stories are of course much adapted and added too, but already during his lifetime the exploits of Rochester had been the talk of the town. Good copy.- some slight staining and thumbing to some plates. Colour plates in order: 1. Frontispiece, beginning " My situation was a curious one..." 2. " I raised her in my arms, it was but a few steps..." 3. " Her bosom zone was untried and..." 4. " I imprinted a kiss on her balmy lips..." 5. " At the shrine of Venus..." 6. " The good natured creature conducted him to her..." 7. " finding a trial of skill between Rochester and the young lady..." 8. " Give me Ambrosia in a kiss..."
