MILBERT, Jacques Gérard.
Itinéraire Pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson et des parties latérales d l'Amérique du Nord, d'après les dessins originaux pris sur les lieux.
The French naturalist, artist, geographer, and engineer Milbert spent eight years from 1815 to 1823 in the United States, exploring the eastern and southern parts of the country, sketching the countryside, studying the flora and fauna, and sending back some eight thousand specimens to the Museum of Natural History at Paris. The present work records his experiences and impressions of the picturesque scenery along the Hudson River.

[Picturesque Route of the Hudson River and Sides of North America, from Original Drawings taken on the spot] Atlas volume only (lacking text and map), with lithographed title page after Smith by George, and 29 [of 54] mounted plates on India paper, lithographed after Milbert by Deroy, Adam, Villeneuve, and others, each EXQUISITELY HAND-COLORED, Folio: FIRST EDITION. Contemporary quarter calf and boards with gilt-lettered red label on upper board. The spine and boards are in poor condition, and the hinges are cracked. Original tissue guards. One plate with a small spot in the image, two others with minor foxing into the margin of the plate, otherwise fine. An exceptional collection of plates from one of the most outstanding series of views of the American landscape ever produced, not normally seen hand-colored. Under the auspices of the Museum of Natural History in Paris, Milbert spent seven years in the United States collecting specimens of flora and fauna. He also brought back the sketches from which these superb lithographs were made. Most of the views are of New York State, but included as well are New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. An attractive and important illustrated work.
