Boilat was one of the earliest indigenous French Catholic priests as well as one of the first native inhabitants to write a book on the history and customs of Senegal, providing an insider's view of the society.

FIRST EDITION. 2 vols, octavo text volume in red cloth boards tooled in blind, spine in five gilt compartments, marbled sides (with large coloured folding map), half-title. 4to atlas vol in original printed boards with a large coloured folding map and 24 coloured lithographed plates by Llanta, and printed by Lemercier in Paris.
