FIRST EDITION. Hardcover in cloth (originally published in 1843 by a different publisher with slightly different Introduction) 2 volume set. 94 beautiful hand-coloured plates plus engraved hand-coloured capital letters starting commentary sections plus colour and B&W text illustrations. A few pages of commentary follow each plate with most commentary sections having either extra colour or B&W text illustrations and all such commentary sections having hand-illuminated woodcut initials based on early manuscripts as the initial capital letter of their text. The books are 11-1/4" tall x 7-7/8" wide. Unpaginated. Volume I bulks 1-1/16" thick and Volume II bulks 1-1/2" thick. Subjects range from the 7th through to the 17th centuries with beautiful use of illustrations and text to illustrate not just the dress of the Middle Ages but also intimate portraits of its famous people, its royalty, home furnishings, lifestyles, even such items as crosses, bells, and mitres. Shaw has presented an exceedingly well-rounded look based on his thorough study of remaining records of this time of life as it was lived in the Middle Ages. Bound in very dark reddish-brown cloth with a textured leather look with gilt spine lettering. The end pages and paste downs may have been replaced as they look newer than the text and binding. Light surface rubbing to binding spine ends and corners with just a slight loss at spine end edges only a previous owner's small name stamp upper front end page in each volume and scattered light-coloured foxing mostly on the title pages with an occasional small light foxing spot throughout the text none blemishing the illustrations. Otherwise in excellent condition--straight clean and tight and incredibly lovely with the multitude of illustrations using such techniques as etchings chromolithographs and wood engravings. Simply a spectacular set. Vol. 2 vol; Colour & B&W Illustrations; 11-5/8" x 8"; Unpaginated pages. Coloured plates in order: Volume 1. 1. Title page. 2. Half title. 3.
