CATLIN, George.
Die Indianer Nord-Amerikas.
Catlin went west five times throughout the 1830s to paint the Plains Indians and record their way of life, making him the first artist to do so. George Catlin (1796 – 1872) was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the Old West.

x,[2],382,[2]pp. Twenty-four fine color plates. Half-title. Quarto. Original pictorial boards, re-backed in a paper, paper label to spine. Boards rubbed and worn, moderate foxing, offsetting, occasional damp staining. The colours are bright and clean. Very good. The first German edition of Catlin and, like the Swedish edition which appeared the same year, a curious hybrid of his two best-known works, LETTERS AND NOTES ON THE MANNERS, CUSTOMS, AND CONDITION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS... (1841) and CATLIN'S NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO... (1844). The text of this edition is an abridged version of the text of LETTERS AND NOTES..., while most of the plates are scaled-down versions of the large folio plates of the ...INDIAN PORTFOLIO... "McCracken notes that this edition, the first in German, was originally issued in eleven parts, with separate decorated paper covers, dated 1st eight parts, 1846; last three parts, 1847.
