FEYERABEND, Franz.
[Costumes Militares des Cantons de la Suisse. Die Eidgenossischen Truppen]

Plates for the extremely rare set: “Costumes militaires des cantons de la Suisse. The Swiss troops. Basle 1792". The city of Basel found itself in a difficult situation when France declared war on Austria and Prussia in the April of 1792 and asked the Confederates for help and to train the military. From the templates, both father and son worked out this famous series of plates that came out in the same year.

[Costumes Militares des Cantons de la Suisse. The Confederate Troops]Folio (363 x 240mm) modern quarter vellum over decorative printed paper boards (lightly soiled). Provenance: unidentified circular ink stamp monogram on front free endpaper and flyleaf - small erased stamp on flyleaf. 26 outlined etchings coloured by a contemporary hand (a number of plates are closely cropped into the plate mark, just touching the image of plate 19 (light scattered spotting). This is Feyerabend's celebrated suite of plates of Swiss military costumes - incredibly rare. Feyerabend came from a family of artists (the landscape artists Augustin & Samuel Feyerabend were his brothers) and abandoned his initial studies of sculpture to pursue a career as a portraitist, landscape artist and later caricaturist, who worked in oils, watercolour and gouache, as well as print media. This suite of 26 plates, which is one of his best-known works, demonstrates his ability to combine these techniques to great effect. They were printed with a lightly-etched outline, and then heavily coloured in both wash and gouache, creating an effect closer to that of an original gouache than of a print.
