The Life of Napoleon, a Hudibrastic Poem in Fifteen Cantos, by Doctor Syntax...

This verse biography of Napoleon has sometimes been attributed to William Combe, famous in his day as the author of the ‘tours’ of Doctor Syntax, but is probably by an anonymous writer seeking to exploit Combe’s success. It was illustrated with thirty engravings by the young George Cruikshank (1792–1878), whose career as a graphic satirist up to that point had been punctuated by repeated abusive caricatures of Napoleon. The engravings follow Napoleon’s progress from his time at military college to his abdication in 1814 and dwells particularly on the massacres, murders, and other iniquities with which his name was associated in Britain. The series of prints concludes with a sunset view of the former Emperor disembarking on Elba in 1814; at the time of publication, it would have been seen as marking the final episode in Napoleon’s story.

Édition originale et premier tirage. 30 estampes satiriques brillamment coloriées de George Cruikshank, dont le titre-frontispice. Une charge de la geste napoléonienne et premier grand livre illustré de George Cruikshank, qui devait assurer son succès. William Combe, alias Doctor Syntax, se penche sur le cas Napoléon, dont il retrace la carrière, depuis l’enfance jusqu’au premier exil à l’île d’Elbe. Le portrait est cruel – et férocement drôle. À Sainte-Hélène, l’Empereur reviendra plusieurs fois sur les attaques dont il fut l’objet. En digne héritier de Gillray et de Rowlandson, George Cruikshank a dessiné trente compositions assassines : son Napoléon enfant rêve de gloire et cogne ses petits camarades ; adulte, il dirige les massacres de Toulon et de Jaffa, pille les œuvres d’art et les monuments, fait assassiner Desaix et le duc d’Enghien… Ses mariages sont des mascarades dont l’assistance est cruellement portraiturée. En Russie, l’armée impériale, en loques, est pitoyable et Napoléon n’échappe aux Cosaques qu’en sautant d’une fenêtre… Le frontispice relate toute l’histoire de Bonaparte qui, de révolutionnaire enragé, gravit sur la gauche une échelle qui, après avoir enjambé une guillotine, le mène en haut de la page, d’où il trône comme empereur assez ridicule à califourchon sur un globe puis tombe sur la droite pour atterir sur un îlot, Elbe. “That cyclical design formula was elaborated in many later frontispieces for popular stories, from Egan’s Life in London to the fontispieces Hablot Knight Browne drew for Dicken’s novels of the 1840s” (Robert Patten). Très bel exemplaire, à grandes marges. Le papier a bruni par endroits et certaines planches laissent une empreinte sur le feuillet en vis-à-vis, mais sans gravité. Les mors ont été habilement repris. (Patten I, 115.- Cohn, 153 : l’exemplaire offre quelques-unes des erreurs de pagination listées par le bibliographe et les deux erreurs dans la légende de planches, marques de premier tirage.- Bates, p. 11 : “A rare and covetable curiosity”.- Johnson, p. 3 : “Like Gillray and their common moral progenitor, Hogarth, Cruikshank had his share of insular prejudice ; and in the years preceding Waterloo among his favorite targets were Napoleon and the French. His animosity appears at its most vitriolic in the thirty coloured engravings he made for William Combe’s The Life of Napoleon. Beautifully bound by Riviere & Son in full blue morocco with triple gilt filets and embossed imperial coat of arms to upper board. Spine in six separate compartments, gilt lettered to the second and third - other compartments defined by small red leather pieces bearing imperial gilt emblems, backed by gilt mosaics. Top edge gilt, gilt inner dentelles, sound copy with wide margins, some offsetting to plates, and some general age toning.
