8vo. 2 leaves + VIII + 236 p. / 2 leaves + 212 p. + 50 hand-coloured engraved costume plates + 2 engraved music plates (on one sheet) small cut-out on top of half-titles in both volumes repaired this repair has given some off-set to title engraved bookplate 'H. Custer' cloth binding title gilt on spine. Fine untrimmed copy. FIRST EDITION of this beautifully illustrated work complete with hand-coloured engraved plates of countrymen and women; including haymaker, haymaking girl farmer, huntsman, milkmaid milkman, embroiderer, mountaineer, servants, peasants, and shepherds. Also, men and women of towns and Alpine regions, including Zürich, Fribourg, Thun, Basle, Lucerne, Soleure, etc. All in colourful traditional dress. With the two music-plates (on one sheet printed recto/verso) with the very popular hymn 'Ranz de vaches des Ormonts' which for one time was forbidden because of the Swiss mercenaries fighting against each other in the different armies by hearing this song, they became so homesick that they deserted. Ann Yosy was a lady traveler who lived and traveled in Switzerland from 1802 to1813. The engravings are partly copied from engravings in the work "Neue Sammlung von Schweizertrachten" by König published in 1811. Rebinding and restoration work on this book by Ron Norman of Hartlepool.
