ROWLANDSON, Thomas.
William Combe.
Journal of Sentimental Travels in the Southern Provinces of France.
A complete specimen of this humourous and engaging social and political satire just before the French Revolution. Rowlandson is known for his political satire and social observation. Like other caricaturists of the Georgian Era, his caricatures are often robust or bawdy.

Octavo, early 20th-century full burgundy morocco, floral gilt corner pieces to boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, also with gilt raised bands, marbled end-papers, floral gilt inner dentelles, top edge gilt. Housed within custom-made matching cloth slipcase. FIRST EDITION with 18 brightly hand-coloured aquatint engravings by famous satirist Thomas Rowlandson handsomely bound by Wood. One of the significant caricaturists to become an extensive book illustrator" Rowlandson studied in France as a young man developing a style whose "rococo delicacy… owed something to this French connection" (Houfe 285). The artist's "rollicking humour and delicate tonal effects" are paired here with the prose of William Combe who worked with Rowlandson on several other productions including the highly popular Dr. Syntax satires (Oxford Dictionary of Art 436). This has an extra plate as usual. Joints repaired. A near-fine copy, most handsomely bound. Coloured plates in order: 1. Frontis. Before the Tribunal at Avignon. 2. Table D'hote. 3. Searched by the Douaniers on the French Frontiers. 4. Consulting the Prophet. 5. The Prophet discovering himself and exposing the deception. 6. The Arrival in Paris. 7. Liberality to infirm beggars on leaving Yvri. 8. Rural Happiness at Caverac. 9. Pleasures of a Poste aux Anes. 10. The Embrace. 11. At Avignon. First sight of Clara. 12. At the Tomb of Laura. 13.
