Java.
One of the best-illustrated works on Java and the Javanese of the 19th-century. The author, Wilhelm Leonard Ritter (1799-1862), traveled widely across the Malayan Archipelago and is regarded as one of the most prolific 19th-century writers of the Dutch East Indies. He was a high-ranking civil servant in Borneo and Sumatra with a dubious reputation in his early life.

With a foreword by H.M. Lange. Extra illustrated title page (only with any significant foxing) and 26 spotless color lithographic plates. Folding plate at the rear with two maps of 242pp. 4to in original red cloth with ornate gilt and blind stamped pictorial boards and spine (re-cased; spine neatly repaired) all edges gilt.
